Why The Sunscreen List™ is not celebrating the bemotrizinol announcement.

PARSOL® Shield has arrived in the United States wearing a crown. 

Its manufacturer calls it a new era in sun protection. The first new sunscreen active approved by the FDA in decades. Sun protection, redefined.

But bemotrizinol—the ingredient behind the PARSOL® Shield trade name—is not new. It has already been used across Europe and other global markets for years.

What changed is its access to the US market.

That may be a meaningful regulatory development. It may give American formulators more flexibility and help create lighter, more wearable chemical sunscreens. But regulatory access is not the same thing as environmental innovation.

The announcement tells us about UV performance, formulation efficiency and global market opportunity. What it does not demonstrate is a cleaner manufacturing process, a reduced lifecycle footprint or a meaningful advance in what happens after sunscreen leaves our skin.

So before we celebrate a new era, The Sunscreen List™ is asking a different question:

What, exactly, is new—and for whom?

 

Summary:

PARSOL® Shield has been crowned the new queen of American sunscreen—but bemotrizinol is not a new card in the global deck.

PARSOL® Shield may be new to the FDA, but it is not new to sunscreen. Regulatory access is progress for the American sunscreen market—but it is not evidence of a cleaner manufacturing process, a reduced environmental footprint or a new standard of environmental responsibility.

 

Case Study:

The filter isn’t new

It is new to the US regulatory framework.

The announcement is primarily a market-access story

It allows manufacturers to use one global filter across more markets, simplify formulation strategy and accelerate speed to market. Those are commercial and formulation benefits.

“Efficient at low concentrations” is not a complete environmental case

Using less active ingredient may matter, but concentration alone does not establish the footprint of its raw materials, synthesis, energy use, degradation, aquatic exposure or finished formulation.

FDA approval answers a different question from SunSafe®

We do not need to argue against its human-safety approval. FDA permission does not answer the environmental question at the centre of the Reef and Eco SunSafe® standards.

Real sunscreen innovation must move beyond adding another filter

Better protection matters. So do manufacturing, transparency, unnecessary formulation load, environmental fate, packaging and what enters the water.
