Why this matters in the SunSafe® Standard

Found in zinc sticks - These formulas are primarily built on zinc oxide — a mineral UV filter we currently rate as moderately reef-conscious within the SunSafe® framework.

While titanium dioxide is widely approved and considered lower concern, questions remain around aquatic accumulation and nano TiO₂ behaviour in marine environments.

Current evidence suggests TiO₂ can accumulate in aquatic systems, and some nano TiO₂ studies have demonstrated oxidative stress impacts in marine organisms under laboratory conditions.

Environmental consensus, however, remains unresolved due to multiple interruptions in real world application.

As a result, these products still perform strongly overall, but precautionary reef score moderation was applied within the SunSafe® framework pending greater transparency around particle size and coating technologies.
